Marking a year of accomplishments for the Ithaca College Athletics Department

The Bombers have dedicated fans and a dedicated Athletic Director who helped score both the Commisissioner's Cup and Director's Cup this year.

Ithaca College has always had a high standard for athletic performance. This year the Bombers received both the honor of placing 22nd out of 449 schools in the Directors Cup, as well as winning the Commissioner’s Cup. These awards, coupled with the schools high academic achievement, has continued to set the bar high both in the Empire 8 Division and nationwide.

While the formula for scoring the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors' Cup is complicated, the Bombers placed well because of high scoring as well as the college's selection of varsity sports. Many Division III schools may not offer sports like crew, wrestling, or tennis, but because Ithaca has a wide variety of sports placed in Division II, they offer a competitive advantage as well as more opportunities for student Athletes. One such example is the crew team, as Athletic Director Kurt Kutler explains “not many schools offer rowing competition and we are one of them, and the Directors' Cup recognizes that.” Ithaca College has placed in the top thirty in the Directors' Cup since the award began.

While the Directors' Cup was an incredible national honor for Ithaca as a Division III school, taking home the Commissioner’s Cup was another exciting win for the Bombers. Kulter explains that while the Directors' Cup was an honor, the teams work specifically towards winning the Commissioner’s Cup because it is a more manageable goal. “That one we have won every single time since it has been awarded -- ten consecutive years and ten Commissioner's Cups,” explains Kutler. The award considers schools in the Empire Eight division including Ithaca, Stevens, Fisher, RIT, Nazareth, Hartwick, Alfred, Elmira, and Utica.

“All positive stories feel great. I am just pleased that we have dedicated student athletes and dedicated coaches who strive to be the best here. We want the type of student athlete who comes to Ithaca that is motivated to win championships,” says Kutler. The Athletic Director also explains that academics have always been a priority, “We have led the conference almost every semester in the number of President’s List recipients.” To be on this list, student athletes need to have a 3.75 GPA and every semester the teams average 100 students who make the list.

From the Directors' Cup to the Commissioner’s Cup and the high academic standards, all of the Ithaca Bombers teams certainly ended the 2010 season on top of their game. Literally.
