Ithaca Offers Prestigious Communications Programs:

Students don't have to wait until graduation to come to Ithaca College--the college hosts a program that allows talented teenagers to hone their artistic skills over the summer months and get a glimpse of Ithaca in the summertime.

From June 29 to July 25, 54 young artists from all over New York State came to Ithaca's campus to participate in the School of Media Arts. The program is offered by the New York State Summer School of the Arts and it provided four weeks of instruction in filmmaking, photography and computer graphic arts to talented young artists ages 13-18.

The program utilized the space and equipment that IC has for their media arts and communications programs. During the program, teens were exposed to the high-tech and high-performance equipment and given the opportunity to immerse themselves in their chosen medium. The teens in the program had to make it through a rigorous audition process to attend, but they were rewarded with challenging classes, critiques, lectures, field trips, and presentations by visiting artists.

At the end of the four week period, the students demonstrated their new knowledge with a show and screening. Photography and computer art were be displayed while film and video students screened their work or presented installations.

Though students were strongly encouraged to produce a product for the final show, the program also stressed the creative process and obtaining the technical skills necessary to fulfill their vision.

The cost of attending the program is $1,500.00, which includes tuition, room, and board. Students who are accepted may apply for financial aid, and the cost of attendance should not discourage young people from applying to the prestigious program. The school has been held annually at Ithaca College since 1992.
