Park Alum's Documentary on Obesity to Screen at Boston Film Festival

Written by Courtney Clemente

Since last fall, Park alumnus Jeff Schmidt ’04 has been diligently editing a documentary on obesity. His hard work has paid off. Schmidt's documentary, Million Calorie March, will be screened at the Boston Film Festival.

The documentary follows Gary Marino, a man who struggled with his weight for over three decades, at one point weighing nearing 400 lbs. Gary tried dieting, but nothing worked. When Gary developed life threatening sleep apnea he decided to embrace the biggest challenge of his life and reshape both his mind and body. He underwent three years of counseling, started eating healthfully, and began exercising. He eventually lost 110 lbs.

In an effort to raise awareness about health-related risks associated with obesity, he embarked on a 1200-mile walk up the east coast.  In his journey that took him across 12 states, the Million Calorie March reached over 70 million people with its obesity awareness campaign

“Million Calorie March” will premiere Tuesday, September 18th at the Loews AMC Boston Common Theater on Tremont Street.
