Ithaca: The Best College Town in the Nation!

Written by Meghan Swope

This week, Ithaca took home a top honor in the American Institute for Economic Research 2010-2011 College Destination Index when it was named the nation's best college town.

This is the second consecutive year that Ithaca has received the honor. As USA Today reports, this index is based on objective data obtained from established organizations such as the U.S. Census Bureau and is not influenced by students or faculty at any of the schools in the ranked locales. The rankings are based on 12 criteria examined across three general categories:

  1. Academic environment (focusing on areas such as diversity and degree attainment)
  2. Quality of life (arts and leisure, cost of living)
  3. Professional opportunity (such as earning potential, unemployment rates, and entrepreneurial activity)

Ithaca has twice beat out State College, PA, to receive the top spot.

As any college student will tell you, there's more to college living than just a campus. At Ithaca, students get involved with tons of organizations and projects that have them interacting with members of the greater community. With beautiful gorges, diverse eateries, festivals, and hundreds of local businesses and organizations, Ithaca has so much to offer and the nation's taking notice. Congratulations, Ithaca -- we're proud to live in the best college town in America.
