Alumni Team Builds a Digital Publishing Revolution

Written by Candace King

After Apple released the iPad in 2010, Simon Baumer ’05 and Paul Canetti ’05 saw a need for magazine publishers to be able to distribute their material using the new format. That same year they founded MAZ Digital, a platform that enables publishers to create and sustain their own app. MAZ Digital now serves 100 publishers from 26 countries. Soon after the launch of MAZ, Baumer and Canetti were named to Inc.’s “30 under 30” list.

That wasn’t the first time the two had launched something new together. While they were students at IC, politics major Baumer and philosophy major Canetti formed IC VoiceStream, a co-ed a cappella group. The lessons they learned from forming a new student organization helped them become successful entrepreneurs.

“People think that starting an a cappella group is just about singing,” Canetti said. “But there’s also a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff, just like creating a software company is not only about software. It’s about all of the operating stuff—financial, legal—in addition to organizing a group of people.”
