Why Ithaca means home to this international journalist

Want to immerse yourself in a foreign country but don’t want to spend an entire semester away? Ithaca College offers many valuable short-term study abroad experiences that take place outside of the academic calendar. Some connect international fieldwork to classroom research. Others focus on foreign internships or are service-learning projects led by committed faculty members. More than 500 IC students took advantage of short-term study abroad options last year. New programs pop up all the time, but here are a few that have become annual favorites.

It’s easy to assume that spending a semester in London is all about sipping tea, sightseeing, and soaking up the local culture, but each year some 75 London Center students get a jump on their careers with exciting internships in and around the city. Here are just a few of the valuable real-world experiences students have had lately.

It can be quite a daunting task to call a city with over seven million unfamiliar faces home. At least, it was for me when I studied abroad in London this past summer. Weary after the long flight to Heathrow Airport, I lugged around what seemed to be about 1,000 pounds of luggage, and realized -- shockingly -- that I was now a foreigner. But as I walked onto the Tube with my fellow Ithaca College students, we prepared for the greatest eight weeks of our lives.
