When Julia Becker ’13 came to Ithaca College, she was unsure of where her story would lead. She never imagined that she would spend weeks in the Rare Books Reading Room of the British Library, transcribing an original work by Renaissance-era humanist Sir Thomas Elyot.


What did you do over winter break? I studied the culture, economics, biodiversity, and history of a country. Oh, yeah—I should mention this educational experience occurred in the country itself. Let me explain. Last fall, I enrolled in the environmental studies course Belize Rainforests, Reefs, and Ruins, which explores the local ecosystems and human impacts on biodiversity. Then, during winter break, students traveled to Belize to experience it all firsthand. If ever there were a class that epitomized hands-on, this is it!
