For many people, using the word ‘retarded’ in a derogatory manner doesn’t warrant a second thought. But for many more that outdated term is insulting and hurtful. Now, one group on campus is trying to stop all use of the word. 


The recent tsunami and earthquake in Japan has been documented as the country's most devastating disaster since World War II. Though organizations like the Red Cross have been quick to respond to the catastrophe with hundreds of medical and response teams, many haven't been as compelled to send their support. Now, a club at Ithaca College is stepping up to lend a hand. 


When I originally sent in my deposit to Ithaca College, I had no idea if I was making the right choice. Now, I can’t imagine who or where I’d be if I hadn’t chosen to come here. If I’d gone somewhere else, I wholeheartedly feel that I wouldn’t be in a place where it’s okay to explore your sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender presentation the way you can at Ithaca. -- Catherine Kirchhoff ’11
