I'm Shanan. I'm an IC junior, a Writing major, and an English minor. But stay tuned--that might not be all!
I came to IC as a Viola Performance major. I've been an English major, a Bio major, a Writing major, and a music major, and as I come down to the wire of graduation, I'm sure the list isn't going to end there.
If you see me on campus I am perpetually wearing one of three Ithaca College sweatshirts I own. My bike is tethered to a lamppost outside of Holmes Hall in the Upper Quads, where I've lived for two years. I'm certifiably Internet-addicted. I check my email way more than is healthy. I've strewn blogs about cyberspace like so many forgotten love letters, and when I leave IC I hope to go to graduate school to get my MFA or my doctorate in Creative Writing, nonfiction.
Ah, the randomness. Well, back to work.
Admit it: You’ve heard about the ROTC. You’ve seen the commercials. But just what is it, really? ROTC, the Reserve Officers Training Corps, isn’t the most well-known or well-understood group on campus. But Alex Bohn ’09 and James Murray ’10, members of the Army ROTC, can shed some light on the subject.
For...
“What really sold me about Ithaca was the fact that I could get involved from day one at the Ithacan,” says blogger Rob Bluey ’01. Bluey, who graduated with a degree in journalism, has become a one-man riptide under the wave of the “new media” that is drastically...
Amid the bad news about global climate change and energy crises, Ithaca College assistant biology professor and ecologist extraordinaire Jason Hamilton has become a leading collaborator in the field of environmental sustainability in higher education. Spearheading the College’s...
A: Ithaca is still working on a campus-wide Wi-Fi system, but currently you’ll find wired Internet access in all the dorm rooms and wireless connections in various hotspots and academic buildings around campus. Basic service is free in the dorms, but the speed you get is similar to dial-up (64 kbps). Premium service packages with more bandwidth are available...
A: Everyone knows that choosing a college is a complicated process. Before long it gets personal, and that’s when you have to really narrow down your choices into what are absolutely the most important things that you need in your new home for the next four years. And where does Ithaca fall in here? I think I’ll answer this question by...
The Rachel S. Thaler Concert Pianist Series, established in 1991 in honor of pianist and College supporter Rachel S. Thaler, has brought many distinguished musical talents to Ithaca College. Last November, the Thaler series hosted world-renowned pianist Peter Serkin. Called one of the most “thoughtful and individualistic musicians appearing before the public...
Have you ever wanted to meet your favorite author and ask him, “How did you do it?” Thanks to the Distinguished Visiting Writers Series, directed by writing professor Katharyn Howd Machan and sponsored by Ithaca College’s writing department, I got to do just that and more when author and teacher Scott Russell Sanders visited IC for a...
Thanks to its musical roots, Ithaca offers something for all talented singers, no matter what major or course of study. Ithacappella, the College's all-male a cappella group, is just one example.
Founded in 1996 by four members of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity, Ithacappella was an alternative for male students who...
What draws an alumnus back to Ithaca College? Assistant professor of chemistry Mike Haaf knows. After graduating with honors from Ithaca College in 1994 and completing his Ph.D. in chemistry in 2000 at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Professor Haaf taught at other institutions before returning to his alma mater as professor and chair of...
Spring break was anything but ordinary for the Ithaca College wind ensemble. One of IC’s many touring musical groups, the wind ensemble had the opportunity to go to Ireland this past March to perform in the Emerald Isle with some of that country’s premier wind bands.
The tour, entitled “An American Tapestry,” featured...
Apolitical to the extreme, all I knew about politics in high school was that my parents and grandparents, with the exception of my blue-state grandmother, voted Republican, and most of my hometown was a stronghold of conservative support. In fact, I had no idea what the difference between a conservative and Republican was. Nor did I care.
...Fulbright awards are an amazing achievement for any student, and, for many institutions, having just one student on its rolls receive a Fulbright is an enormous honor. Last year, the College had two Fulbright winners. This year, Ithaca made history with not two, but three Fulbright recipients!
Fulbright recipient Kelly Helin will research educational...
