Arlana Shikongo ’17
African born and raised, Arlana traveled more than 7,000 miles to pursue her passion for op-ed, long-form narrative and feature writing. A journalism major, with minors in writing and economics, her focus is on economic development and social injustice. Arlana hopes to tell the stories of those most silenced and use her writing to affect global change. Her passions include traveling, experiencing culture and writing poetry, and on campus she is involved in various LGBTQ and ALANA (African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American) communities, as well as with the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs.
At the end of September, world-renowned boxer, fitness expert and TV personality Laila Ali visited Ithaca College and one of our student writers spoke intimately with her. Arlana Shikongo '17 reflects on talking to Ali about overcoming obstacles and father-daughter relationships.
