Last spring, an IC 20/20 class entitled Launching a Green Living Magazine gave students an inside look at magazine publishing.
Assistant writing professor Nick Kowalczyk and Tommy Dunne, a former copy editor for Fuse and current Glamour Staffer, led the class through the logistics of cover design, layout, content, advertising, and production. The students served as editors, writers, designers, and photographers. The finished publication, Fresh Dirt Ithaca, hit newsstands in December and approximately 4,500 copies were mailed to select Tompkins County residents.
Ashley May, senior journalism student, says, "The class showed me the nuts and bolts of how a magazine comes together. We worked so hard on the publications, and it's so rewarding to see the final copy."
"At the moment, we are basking in the reality that this premier issue – after more than a year of planing and preparing – is done," says Kowalczyk, who is waiting to hear if a second issue will be published.
