Get more advice about the magazine industry through Ed2010. Then join the IC chapter!
Ithaca College recently opened an Ed2010 chapter, which is basically an organization for wannabe magazine editors. The national Ed2010 website collects "whisper jobs" and posts internship opportunities, advice and event listings for networking opportunities. At IC, the chapter will work to bring magazine editors (both locally and NYC-based) to talk with writing majors and journalism majors at the college.
This Monday (April 6) at 7 p.m. the chapter will host an "Edible Evening," where the editors and writers of Edible Finger Lakes Magazine will come to talk about publishing, pitching and writing for the regional food magazine. The magazine is actually part of a larger publishing company consisting of over forty publications across the U.S. and Canada (Edible Seattle, Edible Boston, Edible Manhattan, etc). Edible Finger Lakes covers the food and wine culture within the 14 counties of the Finger Lakes, including the town of Ithaca. (I've actually had the fortune of interning with the magazine this semester and it's been a great experience! Pick up a copy if you're in town, or look for one in your area.)
The Edible Evening event is hosted by Ed2010 at Ithaca College and will be free and open to the public. More events are in the works for next semester!
Follow all the concerts, plays, and other events going on at the State Theatre in downtown Ithaca!
Find out more about the visiting comedian. Maybe she's performing near you!
Did any of you happen to catch the second season of Last Comic Standing? Remember that funny little Irish woman, Kathleen Madigan? Well, she performed at the State Theatre tonight in downtown Ithaca.
Since her run on the NBC reality show, she has appeared on HBO specials, Comedy Central, The Tonight Show and The Late Show. She has also participated in the USO Comedy Tour and hosts her own weekly show on Sirius Radio called The Kathleen Madigan Show. She's been dubbed one of the funniest female comedians in America by Jay Leno and Lewis Black (who actually performed at the State Theatre two years ago).
Check her out!
March can be pretty slushy in Ithaca; you never know if it's going to rain, sleet, snow, hail, or be absolutely beautiful (in that case, the skateboards and footballs come out). Since Downtown Ithaca has a pretty good sense of humor, they've created Slush Fest, which takes place today (March 28) from 11 a.m - 5 p.m.---rain or shine!
Like all Ithaca Festivals, Slush Fest 2009 will fill the commons with students, locals, and plenty of activities. There'll be a rain boot fashion show, a raincoat contest, arts and crafts, local vendors, and most importantly an artist corridor--featuring the works of IC artists and photographers.
This event is free and open to the public, and will hopefully become a yearly occurrence.
This coming Tuesday (March 31) the downtown State Theatre will house the Izzy Awards, a celebration of independent media at its finest. There to speak will be "Democracy Now" host/executive producer, Amy Goodman and blogger, Glenn Greenwald.
The award was created by IC's Park Center for Independent Media (PCMA) to honor the best in independent media, the thinkers outside the mainstream media. Free tickets to the event are available for students while supplies last. A reception will be held for IC media editors, beforehand, and the event starts at 7 p.m. Along with speaking, Greenwald and Goodman will be available to sign copies of their books.
In time for the Oscars, Ithaca's Fall Creek Pictures will show Oscar Nominated Shorts in the genres of "Animation" and "Live Action." You'd probably recognize some of these shorts, as they've appeared before popular feature length films. Others were rarely seen by a wide audience, and some are foreign. Fall Creek will run ten "Animation" shorts in sequence for a total running time of 1 hour 35 minutes. During a separate screening, the movie house will show five "Live Action" shorts for approximately the same total running time.
The animation shorts are only presented during the weekend of Friday, February 20 to Sunday, February 22, and the live actions will play the following Monday through Thursday. Fall Creek Pictures and Cinemapolis are two local movie houses known for their independent film offerings, and will soon welcome FLEFF (the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival).
