Ithaca College students spent a recent Saturday afternoon in the greater Ithaca community, building playgrounds, cooking in soup kitchens, and raising money for the Finger Lakes Cancer Resource Center. These activities were all part of USA Weekend magazine's Make A Difference Day, traditionally observed each October.

More than 1,200 students from both Cornell University and Ithaca College participated in the event. Deb Mohlenhoff, IC's assistant director for community service, described Make A Difference Day as "[A]n encompassing national day of helping others.”

In a press release, Mohlenhoff wrote, “We at Ithaca College are glad to be able to show how much we care about our local community and participate in this national day of doing good.”

Other activities included trash pickup, landscaping and beautifying parts of South Hill, and treating about 70 middle-schoolers to the Bombers versus Utica football game. How far do these good works go? About 50 nonprofit and public organizations will benefit from the students' efforts, a Cornell official estimated.
