Soul and Sound at Ithaca

Written by Nicole Meseguer '08 - Tuesday, February 26, 2:30am  ·  0 comments

In the spirit of celebrating Black History Month, the African-Latino Society and Spit That! hosted a night of soul and sound in Emerson Suites.

The suites were filled with candlelit tables and buffet tables, whetting appetites with chicken marsala and shitake mushrooms. While images and blurbs of “unsung heroes” like W.E.B. DuBois and Nikki Giovanni flashed across two screens, the stage lit up with musical and spoken word performances. The night began with the wonderful sounds of the Amani Gospel Singers followed by slam poetry readings from Spit That! The topics ranged from racism to the war in Iraq.

Last but not least, while finishing up my cheesecake, jazz and gospel singer Helen Slade lead a rousing performance that made the Emerson Suites vibrate. Guests were on their feet, waving their hands in the air, and clapping along to the beat. Helen Slade herself even stepped off the stage to weave in and out of tables, dancing with the crowd. They were rhythms to remember.
