On September 15, Ithaca College's School of Health Sciences and Human Performance and Sustainable Tompkins joined together for a health and sustainability conference to discuss the link between health concerns and sustainability.
Presenters discussed the methods in which the community could tackle health concerns, such as global warming, in a sustainable way. Other presentations included information on sustainable solutions such as building healthy community infrastructures, improving nutrition, and greening medical facilities. One of the speakers was HSHP's dean Steve Siconolfi who delivered a presentation titled "Health Educators as Partners in Sustainability."
The keynote address, “Protecting Health, Climate and Communities through Sustainable Development,” was given by Dr. Jonathan Patz, a researcher who has briefed Congress on the health risks associated with climate change.
The goal of the conference was to urge health-care providers and planners, educators, elected officials, and businesses to craft healthier systems of living and working together in a manor that will not only benefit the people, but benefit the environment as well.
